Volunteer Highlights

  • Green Team Volunteer Days got off to a great start on July 15 when eight volunteers weeded out the invasive thistle and planted more native perennials in the Gilbert Byron meadow. This meadow is part of Pickering Creek’s Pollinator Trail- a short easily accessible trail connecting gardens and natural areas that are especially attractive to butterflies and other beneficial insects.  The meadow planting is one of the habitat enhancements and stewardship projects supported by Together Green.  Look for details regarding the next Green Team date in the ‘coming up section’.

  • Kudos to the office painting crew who have been busy over the past two weeks power washing, scraping, priming and painting the exterior of the office! Ten volunteers including Bob Mason, John Bayliss, Julien Larkin, Colin Walsh, Cathie Liebl, Norman Klug, Bill Barnes, Mary Ann Ray, Herman Espenhorst, and John Trax have already clocked in over  190 hours on the project. It’s looking great so far. Check out more pictures and ongoing progress on the project at our Facebook page. We are looking forward to seeing the final results.  Special thanks goes out to John Bayliss for coordinating the office painting project.  John has spent countless hours planning the project, gathering materials, setting up and breaking down work areas, and organizing fellow volunteers in addition to working along side them.

Volunteer Appreciation

Volunteers are encouraged to take advantage of public programs going on at Pickering Creek. Come out and participate!   A Pollinator Trail Walk will be held on Sunday, August 8, 2010 from 10 AM-12 PM.   Participants will join Pickering Creek’s Education Coordinator Mandy Smith at the Garden Classroom to learn about herbs and native plants that attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Check out the different ways you can provide shelter for native bees. Five spaces are offered without charge to volunteers on a first come first-served basis.  Sign up early! Make sure you mention that you are a current volunteer. If you would like to bring along a guest the charge is $5 per adult and free per child.

Coming Up in August!

‘Green Team’ Volunteer Day

The next 'Green Team' Volunteer Day is scheduled for Wednesday, August 11, from 10AM- 12noon. This volunteers stewardship day will include activities organized on an as-needed basis ranging from watering and mulching newly planted areas to trail clearing and site maintenance. No prior sign up is necessary for current volunteers. However emails to confirm participation or inquire about activities are encouraged.  Teens seeking service-learning hours must have a parent sign for permission to participate when they arrive.

National Public Lands Day

Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 19 from 10AM-3PM for Public Lands Day at Pickering Creek Audubon Center! We need your support to get Pickering Creek in tiptop shape for the fall. There will be variety of stewardship activities including trail maintenance, native plant installation and more.  Consider coming out with a friend or your whole family.  Check out the September Issue of Bird Call for more information. This project is supported by TogetherGreen
