Many of us spend our entire lives pursuing our dreams, but few of us have the drive and determination to achieve them. Among the aspirations of writer and poet Gilbert Byron was to paint a picture of the people and scenes of the Chesapeake Bay using words as his medium. Before his death in 1991, Byron had pursued and achieved this dream through hundreds of written works. Today, Pickering Creek Audubon Center would like to turn his dream into a legacy starting with one of the most significant artifacts Byron left behind: The Gilbert Byron House.
The Gilbert Byron House will:
remind local residents of their special former
teacher and neighbor;
allow Pickering to use literature (and the humanities) to teach newcomers and visitors about the rich history of this region of the country.
